on an unassuming cassette, just labelled ‘robert rental’ in green dymo tape, these demos have lain unheard for years amongst his family’s treasured possessions, cared-for artefacts of a life cut short far too soon.
these songs, which robert recorded in his council flat in battersea in 1980, provide an enticing glimpse into his all-too-infrequent solo work. on most occasions, robert worked with thomas leer, daniel miller or other collaborators. these are rough recordings, tape hiss still in evidence, but his creativity shines through the murk, like uncut diamonds.

east man is a new project from anthoney hart and its material predates his previous work as basic rhythm. his unique take on grime reduces the sound to its steely fundamentals, bringing in influences from dancehall, drum and bass and techno to gird the voices of the mcs he works with. his own name for this hardcore continuum mongrel is hi tek.
anthoney struck a friendship with the academic and theorist paul gilroy, who wrote the album introduction below, after starting personal research on representations of working class and mixed race families. he asked paul for some help after coming across his work via stuart hall, paul’s mentor. their discussions and friendship developed, and it dawned on anthoney that his research and the east man album had some synergy, so he asked paul to write a piece conveying that.

repress of this album by the drummer of fela kuti. produced by doctor l. incl asiko as sampled by jaydee for commons hot shit! featuring remastered versions and ariya (psyche juju mix) as bonus track, which was not part of the original release. tony allen completely rewrote the books on what was possible within the afrobeat genre with his stunning 1999 album, black voices. when one considers exactly what is going on throughout black voices, it is quite mind boggling, as it is almost impossible to associate a minimalist, electronic feel with the massive walls of sound which allen was known to create.

tmpz002 of temporize records is an ep from glasgow affiliate dam-ru, drawing on themes of gnosticism, occultism, cosmology and automatism, dam-ru displays his attempts at transcendence through sound, and delves deep into the subconscious, to a world within worlds.
he crafts complex yet warm, organic electronic music that flirts with ambient, dub and experimental sounds. with “too many voices”, his debut ep, he explores a far eastern, mystical theme in producing 4 tracks that wouldn’t feel out of place in an epic film score.

the tenth output of invite’s choice records is another hard hitting banger made by border one.
drumrim’s straightforward four to the floor kick is accompanied by a hard hitting bass and a repetitive leadsound that evolves throughout the track. the overdriven hihats and rides combine well with the panicky sound. diffuse goes along with the flow set by the a1 track, yet has a bit more percussive feel to it due to the toms added.
hatchet on the b-side provides an aggressive kick and percussive elements. the sound evolves around one overdriven synth sound that drains you in to the track. perfect for fast transitions while mixing. copylust ends the ep a bit slower bpm wise, but emits the same energy as the previous tracks. straight-forward, hypnotising, hard hitting contemporary techno.
